On April 5, 2023, community leaders, volunteers, and service professionals gathered at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center in Belfast, Maine for a full-day conference focused on strengthening volunteer service and leadership across the state. The event brought together diverse voices in Maine’s nonprofit and service sectors for engaging workshops, networking, and skill-building activities.
A Day of Learning & Collaboration
The conference opened with breakfast and networking, setting the tone for a vibrant day of learning and relationship building. Attendees were encouraged to participate in three workshop sessions scheduled throughout the day, with choices tailored to a range of interests and community service challenges.

The morning plenary was delivered by Representative Aaron M. Dana, Tribal Representative of the Passamaquoddy Nation, offering insights on community service from a cultural and civic leadership perspective.
The afternoon plenary featured Angela Okafor, Esq., MBA — a dynamic leader whose career spans law, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. Originally from Nigeria, Angela’s journey reflects deep commitment not only to her legal practice but also to service through AmeriCorps, nonprofit board leadership, and community coalition building. Her story underscored the power of service in shaping inclusive and resilient communities.

- Leaps & Boundaries – A Conflict Sandbox: Led by Linc Oliver-O’Neil, participants explored conflict styles and relationship building through experiential exercises.
- Approaches for Building Community Through Food: AmeriCorps members shared how food-based projects foster connection, inclusion, and support across Maine communities.
